TANG NS CHAMPIONS 2005
TANG N. S 5 – 12 MILLTOWN N.S 2 – 7
Tang N.S played Milltown in the Cumann na mBunscol final in Cusack Park on Saturday last and emerged worthy winners after a display of fast, open football. Sporting new look jerseys Tang looked in tip top shape and soon looked the same on the field. Darragh Burke opened the scoring for Tang in the first min with a well taken pt from a neat pass from Martin Rock. Showing no signs of nerves Lorraine Duncan finished off a powerful run with a cracking shot for another pt. Trevor English and Lorraine were dominating midfield and with John Rock sweeping up anything that passed by midfield Tang began to press home their advantage. Indeed Milltown’s next attack was intercepted by John Rock who started off on a tremendous solo run beating three defenders to kick the best pt of the match with his left foot. Tang were rampant now and another fine clearance from John Rock found Trevor English who looked up and kicked a glorious pass to find Darragh Burke free inside and Darragh coolly slotted the ball home with his left foot. Two mins later Milltown were caught napping when John Rock won a free in defence who found Trevor English free and
another laser like pass found Darragh Burke creeping inside the Milltown radar. Darragh attempted to round the Milltown keeper Alan Geraghty but was pulled down, however Darragh took the free quickly and duly planted the ball in the net. Milltown were starting to find their feet around the middle of the park and good work from Patrick Somers found James Hilton whose shot just tailed to the right and wide. Milltown did open their account with a pt from James Hilton after good inter play between himself and John Mahon. Further pts from the ever alert Owen Coughlan, Trevor English and Martin Rock widened the gap before James Hilton added his second pt from a free. James was now flying and he scored a great goal after a strong solo through the middle. Milltown’s joy was short lived as Tang replied almost straight away, Owen Coughlan won a great ball near the side line and beat his man with a beautiful side step and found Darragh Burke once again inside who finished expertly to the net for his hat trick of goals. Milltown replied with an excellent pt from Aoife Mulligan before Trevor and Darragh kicked two excellent pts. Martin Rock, who was giving the Milltown defence a torrid afternoon, then was desperately unlucky to see his shot crash of the crossbar with the keeper beaten in what would have been the move of the match. This brought the first half action to an end with Tang holding a sizeable lead.
Aided with the breeze Milltown started the second half with all guns blazing and soon had kicked a pt from sharp shooter James Hilton. Milltown kept pressing but got little change from Tang defence where Siobhan Farrell was a tower of strength aided in no small way by the tight marking Aaron Eliot. Whatever hope of a Milltown comeback were soon dashed as Darragh Burke kicked a pt after a free on Owen Coughlan and Martin Rock rifled an unstoppable shot to the bottom corner of the net after terrific work by Pedro Byrne. Darragh Burke then set up Martin Rock for a goal
chance, who was denied by a brave save from Alan Geraghty. The speedy Pedro Byrne following up finished the rebound soccer style to the net. Trevor English kicked a fine pt before James Hilton scored a great individual goal despite the best efforts of Gareth Higgins who was solid through out. As the game petered out both sides brought on as many subs as possible to play, an indication of the excellent spirit that prevailed through out the match. Gary Sheerin, Simon Daly and Niall Lynn came on in the forward line where Niall was unlucky to see his goal bound shot drop short. Adrian Nestor and Paul O’Neill slotted into defence, Paul making many interceptions. Well done to Tang who were truly excellent on the day and commiserations to a gallant Milltown team.
