TANG 1-05 TUBBERCLAIR 0-09
Tang played near neighbours Tubberclair on Sunday in Pairc Chairan in the first round of this year’s intermediate championship. Conditions were poor with heavy rain and hail showers leaving the surface very slippy. As both teams took up their positions, supporters were looking forward to a good contest. Unfortunately it was the Tubberclair supporters who were the happier as their team stormed at Tang and seemed to be able to control all aspects of the game in the first half. Tubberclair had a point on the board inside two minutes, two wide’s followed and another point on seven minutes. It wasn’t until eight minutes gone that Aidan Burke got Tang off the mark with free from twenty metres out. A shot from Aidan a few minutes later came back off the upright , unfazed Tubberclair attacked again and added two points one from a free, Martin Rock and Sean Egan then had two wides that should have been converted. Tubberclair then seemed to take control again and scored three unanswered points on the trot. Tang did manage a rare break into opposition territory at this stage and Martin Rock won a ball on his own twenty one and ran at the Tubberclair back line, rode one tackle only to be halted by a foul from the corner back, Aidan stepped up and pointed the free to bring the half to an end. With both teams heading for the dressing rooms for the fifteen minute break, Tang supporters could not have been looking forward to the second half with the score at
TANG 0-02 TUBBERCLAIR 0-07
The second half started with the heavens opening with a heavy rain shower which we thought was just going to dampen the Tang spirits even more but the lads lifted their game right from the throw in , with Joe Conlon gaining the upper hand in the middle of the park. It was all Tang in the first five minutes with Martin Rock coming close with two minutes gone. Chris Connor won a ball in the Tang full back line and combined well with Robert English and Owen Coughlan in a run up the left hand side of the park only to see his high effort float wide. Fergal Wilson extended the Tubberclair lead with a fine point from around twenty five metres. But Tang were starting to gain the upper hand in most positions at this stage with John Rock outstanding as he hassled and harassed Tubberclair at every opportunity, along with some fine link up play to carry the ball deep into the tubberclair lines. Aidan then added two points from frees, one of these being from a foul on the fore mentioned John Rock. With the lead now slowly being eaten away Tang were growing in stature Aiden added another fine free but then Tang’s accuracy abandoned them with four kicks going astray just when they had Tubberclair on the rack. Connor Marlow and Fergus Farrell were introduced at this stage as Tang pushed hard. Then a nice crossfield pass from Aidan Burke found Martin Rock who panicked the full back with some nice footwork and was hauled back just inside the area and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Martin placed the ball and with a short run up sent the county net minder Gary Connaughton the wrong way and the green flag was raised. From the kick out Tang pushed hard for the equaliser and a free from around the middle of the pitch dropped in the tubberclair square, two of the biggest men on the pitch Gary Connaughton and Joe Conlon contested the dropping ball, neither got a clean contact and in the ensuing melee the Tubberclair back line came away with the ball and time ran out for Tang. In Tang’s case this was a game of two halves the first poor, the second vastly different but with lots of room for improvement. Well done to Tubberclair and we will look forward to the next meeting.
