TANG V MILLTOWN

DIV 7A TUES 8 MAY

Tang 2-19 Milltown 0-04

Tang and Milltown togged for this fixture on Tuesday evening, conditions were good with a mild, sometimes gusting breeze blowing across the pitch.

Tang started well and took a commanding lead from the start with Martin Rock proving to be Tang’s most dangerous forward but Tang did have a better spread of marksmen on the day with all forwards getting on the scoreboard.

Tang did all the running in this half but most of the drama was set for the second half.

Firstly Tang keeper Padraig Reilly bravely contested a high ball lobbed into the Tang square , the ball was broken down to the on rushing Milltown centre half forward who took the ball on the run and pulled the trigger , but padraig was not going to be beaten and with a full stretch dive to the left hand post managed to tip the ball around the butt of the post. But as play was to resume Padraig had to retire with a suspected hamstring strain and was replaced by Tang stalwart Damien Gill finding himself between the posts for the first time this year.

Next to fall foul was Tang’s forward Martin Rock who picked up a niggle with twenty minutes to go. Martin was replaced by the fresh legs of Niall Lynn who took up his position at corner forward. Although in control of this game Tang immediately came under pressure from Milltown as they started their revival, they tore at tang from the kick out, perhaps thinking they could capitalise on an inexperienced keeper and corner forward. How wrong they were, from when Niall took to the pitch, he was involved whenever the ball passed midfield, harassing Milltown’s backs when they had the ball and encouraging his Tang team mates at every opportunity. At one stage, breaking from the corner to assist William Flanagan who found himself surrounded by three Milltown backs Niall received the pass, turned and delivered a cross field pass to Darragh Burke who finished off a nice point.

In the last few minutes Niall was involved again, Tang’s midfielder Colm Conlon won the Milltown kickout, offloaded to Joshua Flanagan who found himself hitting a wall of Milltown backs. Naill Lynn burst from the blocks in the corner, lost his marker collected the pass from Josh, hand passed to Fergus Farrell and turned sprinted to the 14 yard line, called for and received the ball from Fergus, was just about to take his point when the corner back got a hand on his jersey and dragged him back, immediately the ref blew the free. Niall shook himself, hopped the ball twice, eyed up the post took three steps forward and shoot , the ball left his boot and split the post right over the black spot.

As a sign of the esteem Niall is held in Tang and indeed in opposition clubs, both sets of players and supporters cheered as he turned to take up his position after scoring.

This was a good game played in good spirit on the night.

My man of the match has to go to Naill Lynn for his team work and accuracy, indeed I think some of the Tang’s forwards could be looking over their shoulder come championship as Niall Lynn seems to be hitting form just at the right time.
