2007 GALVIN CUP

TANG 2-6 TUBBERCLAIR 0-10

The final of the Galvin Cup took place on Friday evening last with host team Tang and neighbours Tubberclair taking part. Grounds man, Martin Malone had the pitch in tip top condition. Tang, having won the toss, elected to play with a stiff breeze but actually it was Tubberclair who started the brighter. Conor Elliot kicked a fine pt and mins later stretched their lead with a James Martin free from 50m. Tang opened their account with a Denis Bannon free after good work by Digger Higgins. Tang were dealt a severe blow when centre forward Alan Higgins injured an ankle and was replaced with Dean Reddin. Further pressure resulted in another pt from Denis Bannon. Tang were now enjoying a good spell with Joe and Colm winning good ball around midfield and Paul Conway directing operations at full forward. In fact Paul Conway won an excellent long ball after great defending from Mike Bannon and set up Digger who off loaded to Eamon Carey who blasted the ball to the net. Tubberclair kept in touch with frees from Jamie Martin.

Tang finished the half stronger with an excellent move which saw Dean Reddin getting through on goal but he was judged to be fouled although he finished strongly to the net. However Denis Bannon made no mistake from the resultant penalty kick to leave it 2-4 to 0-4 at the interval.

Tubberclair started the second half flying and had two points on the board in as many minutes. Tang responded with a pt from Denis Bannon after a mazy run but Tubberclair keep plugging away but Tang defended in numbers and restricted Tubberclair to long distance shooting. Colm Donoghue then stretched Tang lead again with an excellent long range effort. Tang had other chances and were unlucky not to goal again when Digger saw his shot shave the post with the keeper beaten. Tubberclair narrowed the gap again to 3 pts and laid siege looking for that elusive goal but Tang defended well through Gregory Carey, Kieran Duncan and Alan Murray and Michael Galvin. So after a ten year wait, Tang regain the Galvin Cup. This was an excellent team performance with every man playing his part, and should add confidence for the remaining of the season.
