Tang v St Marys Rochfortbridge

Tang played host to St Marys last Saturday evening in the Division 2 league looking to keep their push for promotion on track. The fine conditions allowed both sides to serve up a fine game of football which was very much a game of two half.

The game was nip and tuck for the first twenty minutes with both sides trading points early on. Aidan Burke got Tang’s first point before Fergus Farrell raced through the St Marys defence and slotted over the bar. A brace of points from Martin Rock gave Tang a one point lead however Rochfortbridge responded with three points to lead by six points to four. Tang really took over at this stage with Fergus Farrell and Trevor English getting on top at midfield giving them a platform to attack. Aidan Burke found space behind the St Mary’s defence and picked out Alan Higgins on the edge of the square who palmed the ball into the net for the game’s opening goal. Tang tagged on three more points through Aidan Burke, Alan Higgins and Fergus Farrell before Niall Neary found himself one on one with the keeper and cooly dispatched to the net. St Marys managed to get a point however this was cancelled out by an Aidan Burke free to leave the half time score reading Tang 2-9 St Marys 0-7.

Rochfortbridge came out in the second half all guns blazing quickly knocking over four points. Tang were reduced to 14 men at this stage and it when Rochfortbridge reduced Tang’s lead to two points it looked like the game was in danger of slipping away from Tang. However Tang regrouped and Martin Rock got a vital point to stem the tide. Aidan Burke cancelled out another Rochfortbridge point before two excellent points form Niall Neary and John Rock gave Tang a three point lead. St Mary’s continued to push on but a quick counter attack from Tang ended up with Fergus Farrell breaking through the Mary’s defence and finishing expertly to the net. Although St Mary’s three the kitchen sink at Tang good defending from Dean Reddin, Colm Donoghue and Chris Connor kept them goalless until the very last minute when a St Marys high ball ended up in the net. This goal was merely a consolation and Tang ran out winners with a shoreline of 3-13 to 1-16.

This good performance in the face of adversity leaves Tang top of the table with one game remaining.
