HISTORIC U-12 VICTORY FOR SUPERB MARYLAND/TANG

MARYLAND/TANG……….2 – 17

GARRYCASTLE……………0 – 8

A brilliant performance by the u-12 footballers of Maryland/Tang brought the “A” County Title to the new club for the first time when they overwhelmed Garrycastle in Pairc Chairan. Played in splendid sunshine on an excellent surface, the game was over as a contest long before full-time, but the standard of football from the winners kept the large attendance entertained to the finish.

Despite playing against the wind in the first half, Maryland/Tang had the better of early exchanges. A pt from Tom Browne put them ahead in the first min, but Tom McHugh soon equalized with a free from the hands. Denis Bannon restored Maryland/Tang’s lead, but two quick pointed frees from Tom McHugh put Garrycastle in front for the only time in the match. Daniel Percival’s equalizing pt was quickly followed by Maryland/Tang’s opening goal which was finished to the net by Vincent Browne. Two pts from Denis Bannon put the winners five pts clear but Garrycastle had a good spell before the interval, as pts from Tom McHugh, Paddy Mulvihill and Patrick Golden left just two pts between the sides.

Maryland/Tang grabbed the initiative early in the second half and built up a commanding lead with pts from Daniel Percival (2), Denis Bannon, Vincent Browne and Thomas Browne. A Paddy Mulvihill pt for Garrycastle was quickly answered by pts from James Reynolds and Daniel Percival and as their confidence grew, Maryland/Tang ran out worthy winners.

This was a stunning performance by a well coached Maryland/Tang side, and great credit to their mentors for the level of skill and standard of teamwork they displayed. This victory augers well for the future of the game in both clubs and they can look forward to further glory in years to come. There were no weak links in this team and players like Martin Convey, Owen Farrell, Nigel McMorrow, Daniel Percival, Denis Bannon and Vincent Browne will surely make an impact in the higher grades.
